Sign Health – the national Deaf Health Charity and a key partner for the Faculty’s SORD (Social Research with Deaf People) team led by Professor Alys Young – has launched a new national service for immediate BSL (British Sign Language) interpreter access in health situations.
This means that any health professional – staff or student – who needs to communicate with a Deaf BSL user and vice versa can now do so immediately via remote access interpreting in real time.

The service covers all NHS funded services in England and Wales and is free for all who use it during the coronavirus pandemic.

Training Services

We offer courses that are interactive, informative, enjoyable and designed to improve communication between D/deaf people and hearing people.

We can also tailor and personalise courses to the needs of organisations or groups of individuals.

All of our training staff are experts in their subject and crucially, also have personal experiences of D/deafness in all its forms. The D/deaf community has a rich culture and history and our trainers reflect this.

Training is suitable for everyone and can include:

  • Deaf Awareness (DAT)
  • British Sign Language course (BSL Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4)
  • Hearing aid awareness
  • Communication tactics
  • Taster courses in a range of topics

Courses are certified by, and offer a recognised qualification from, the awarding body SIGNATURE, and the INSTITUTE OF BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE (IBSL).

“I have completed all my BSL courses through DSN. I am currently doing my Level 4. I have enjoyed all the courses I have completed and had much fun doing them!”

“DSN provides a relaxed and friendly learning environment. I have learnt a lot from my tutor and have gone on to use the skills and qualifications I have gained in to my career. I would recommend to anyone to complete their courses through DSN and their tutors.”
