New Tech Improves BSL Accessibility

Revolutionary new tech is set to make websites more accessible to people who use British Sign Language (BSL) as a first language.

A partnership between Cheshire-based charity DSN and innovative start-up Signapse has helped to develop a BSL Signer overlay which can now be installed on websites and provides Sign Language Translation.

The overlay application has been launched today which is also the beginning of Deaf Awareness Week 2023.

This means that the 87,000 people who use BSL every day in the UK can now access information written in English, in their native language.

Dr Jenna Littlejohn from DSN has worked with Signapse founder Sally Chalk on the new overlay application and Signapse’s other pioneering work such as AI BSL boards in train stations.

Dr Littlejohn said: “It’s been incredible to work with Sally and her team and blend our history and knowledge with her hi-tech approach to making BSL more accessible – and this is just the start! We know that Signapse’s work will help to break down barriers in communication and messaging for the deaf community which will improve their quality of life, health, employment opportunities and educational attainment and overall well-being. Something DSN has been working to obtain for almost half a century!”

Lisa Birtles, who is a native BSL user and BSL tutor with DSN said with the shortage of interpreters in the UK at the moment, AI technology is a great way to fill the gap.

She added: “AI technology will transform the lives of people who use BSL as a first language like me. We know that it won’t replace human signers but it will dramatically increase the quantity of signed content that can be made available where human interpretation is difficult. This will enable interpreters to focus on in-person interpretation and emergency situations which require a face-to-face human signer. Which is a much better use of their limited time.”

Signapse CEO Sally Chalk, who is also the founder of Clarion Interpreting Limited, the UK’s largest BSL interpreting business, explains that the technology to overlay BSL onto websites is just the start.

“Our horizon mission is towards unconstrained sign language translation, with the ability to generate a signed translation given any English sentence,” said Sally. “We are proud of the progress and partnerships we have already made and our work with DSN has been invaluable so far, but there is a lot more we want to do to achieve our goal, so watch this space!”
